These are finite pools, and the more you use the less you will have later, however, these pools will grow as you level up, given you more resources to spend as the game progresses. The system may have actually made more sense without HP. In Torment when you undertake a Skill Check (opportunity with a percentage chance to succeed or fail) or an Attack you can use points from your Stat Pools: Might, Speed or Intellect to increase your chance of success in succeeding the task or attack. That actually goes a long way towards explaining why the 3 stat related upgrades per Tier feel so unnecessary. It feels wierd in torment because you don't have that sense of danger using stats, it's just mana to you. So you actually need edge not to kill yourself when using abilities and skills (that is why training and all is so focused). In the original ruleset, you don't have a HP pool, your HP are you stats, when you take damage you take it off your might, when it goes to 0 you take it off speed and last intellect (then you die at 0/0/0, and everytime one pool drops to 0 you get a malus).
